KaM Remake + Krom's Map Editor

Hi,

Can I use Krom's Map Editor to create a multiplayer map for KaM Remake? If so, which 'type' do I need to choose in the beginning? Original KaM TPR/TSK?

Thanks :D

The Remake uses exactly the same map format as KaM, so yes you can. Given that the built in map editor is not very good yet I recommend using Krom's map editor with my mission editor to make missions, and my script editor (version 0.3_beta of my mission editor) if you need to do something disallowed in the later versions because KaM only supports 6 players in multiplayer.

As for the 'type', in all of the versions I've seen they type options are disabled anyway. The only difference between TSK and TPR formats are that TPR has some more terrain types (fire, ice and swamp) and otherwise the formats are the same and will work with each other. The Remake would work with either, as it supports all of the terrain types of TPR and nothing else is different. Make sure you have the latest version of his map editor from his site or our Google Code page.

If anyone would like help with map making or using my editor/my script editor please let me know. We'd love to include your maps with the Remake. (especially multiplayer maps)
Lewin.

Thanks Lewin.

Is there a full documentation / tutorial on the creation of maps? I'm having a hard time understanding Krom's map editor (even though I get better by the minute).

For example: I don't know how to test my map in KaM Remake.. Do I need to create my map first with Krom's editor, and then open it in your editor to create the DAT file?

Does your editor have a full documentation?

Or do I not need your editor to create a multiplayer map?

Last question for now: what's in your opinion the best mapsize for 6 players?

Unfortunately there is no full documentation. Just play around with it and experiment. If you have any specific questions let me know.

To test your map in the KaM Remake:
1. Make a .map file with Krom's editor, and save it as <KaMRemake>\Maps\MyFirstMission\MyFirstMission.map (note that MyFirstMission must be the same for both)

2. Make a mission file (.dat) in my editor and save it as <KaMRemake>\Maps\MyFirstMission\MyFirstMission.dat (note, you can get my editor to load the map to be displayed in the background by clicking the Browse button above the minimap but below the tab called Map)

3. Run it in the Remake.

If you want to make an 8 player multiplayer map it is slightly more complicated because my editor does not support 8 players in multiplayer (because KaM didn't, I didn't foresee the Remake all that time ago) You need to use my script editor (early versions of my mission editor, 0.3_beta is best) to combine the last two teams.

Thanks again, Lewin :)

Although I have limited time these days (internship, 40 hours a week + sports + work, etc.) I will continue this evening :)

When I have any more questions I'll post them here, so other people may find it helpful.

It definately has some features most probably no one ever used.

When I will release my fighting map, I will release a tutorial about some of this features at the same time.

At the moment, I'm still struggling with myself whether I should wait for the next exe release or not, because of the TPR troops.

As soon as I am clear about that point, it will be released together with one tutorial.

There are many more features which are not documented, maybe other people will come and write tuts.

Hi Lewin,

I'm having difficulty using your editor. When I want to add a buildig to Player 1 (e.g. Storehouse), the moment I press "OK", your editor exits immediately..

Am I doing something wrong, or is this a bug?

Edit: the editor also exits when I click 'cancel'.

It should be released next week so you won't have to wait long.

@T*AnTi-V!RuZz:
A few questions:
- Which versions are you using? (0.9 is the latest and should not have many bugs)
- What sort of crash? Silent, or with a message?
- How are you adding the storehouse? In the "Treeview"? On the map using the "Placement" tab? Or via the script?

It's easiest to add buildings using the "Placement" tab to drop them onto the map. (make sure the map is loaded, if not you'll have to browse for it manually. You should be able to see the terrain)
The only way I was able to reproduce this crash was by adding a building to a coordinate >192. If you can describe more precisely how to reproduce it that would be great.

It could also be caused by opening a strangely formatted mission file, but I doubt this is the problem.

When I use Krom's map editor and then open it in the remake, save it in the remake and then open it in the map editor again I notice that when I try to place something it automatically creates the edges while it is like in the middle of a mountain.

Also objects aren't available for me in Krom's map editor.

Hi Lewin,

- I'm using the latest version, downloaded from your website.
- Silent crash (It just exits, and then: nothing).
- I'm adding the storehouse through the Tree view.

I haven't yet found another way to add buildings (placement tab?).. I can use any co?rdinate I want, it still crashes (on "OK" AND on "Cancel").

So: I just create a new file, load my map that I made in Krom's editor.

Then, in the tree view, I try to add a building, and it just crashes..

Yes, that's because Krom's editor stores additional information in the map file to make the tile edging happen automatically. Editing it in the Remake will lose this information, so then Krom's editor will not understand how to make the tiles connect nicely.
Also objects aren't available for me in Krom's map editor.
That is almost certainly because you did not install Krom's map editor into your KaM folder. You must extract it into your KaM folder so it can load the object sprites from the game.

@T*AnTi-V!RuZz: Please take a look at this screenshot to see what Placement is:
http://lewin.hodgman.id.au/kam/Temp/placement.gif

Let me know if it crashes when you place things this way. I think you'll find it a lot easier.

I've tried again and I still can't make it crash. Can you try doing it with the editor in English mode? I know in earlier versions there were bugs that occurred because of issues in the translation, so that might be the problem.
If that doesn't fix it can you please do all of the steps up until placing the storehouse which causes the crash, then save the mission file and send it with the map to me?

Other things to try:
- See whether you can make it happen on any map, e.g. select one of the original KaM maps when you create the mission.
- Try opening one of the original KaM missions and see whether you can place buildings in them.

I'm really curious about this bug now.
Lewin.

HOW could I miss THAT? -.-

Placement works just fine :)

I changed to the English translation, and it crashed too.

I'm not quite sure what you mean? How can I save the mission file after the editor has crashed? Even so, I've uploaded these files for you:

http://www.2shared.com/file/MYcL1ld9/CrashFiles.html
Other things to try:
- See whether you can make it happen on any map, e.g. select one of the original KaM maps when you create the mission.
- Try opening one of the original KaM missions and see whether you can place buildings in them.
It also crashes when I want to add buildings to already existing maps / missions through the tree view.

Ok, well use placement for buildings and keep saving regularly in case it crashes. Hopefully you can still edit other things in the treeview without it crashing, as otherwise there are a lot of features you can't use.

Thanks for all the information, I'm really confused by this one because until now I haven't received any serious bug reports for version 0.9 despite it being released for 3 years. I still can't reproduce it.

Let me know if I can help you further.

Just checked that, I have the same problem, but I got a pop up message for like less than a second so I couldn't read it even if I tried to make a screenshot.
