[READ ME] How to organize a Tournament

Several ones who've been paying attention to the Tournament section on this forum may have noticed that it's no longer possible to create a new topic. There have been organized several tournaments since the 'birth' of this section. Only a few of them were successful. Most of them just died somewhere in the middle of the tournament. To prevent this from happening in the future, we came up with a way we think will help to organize a better tournament.

Normal users no longer have permissions to create a new topic here. Instead, members willing to organize a tournament should present their plans to the KnightsandMerchants crew. You can do this by sending any of us a PM with the plans and they will be discussed behind the scenes. We will make some remarks and after the final proposal we will make a decision whether we think the tournament can be successful or not. This means that tournament organizers will have to put some effort into their plans. Stuff like '60pt, 2vs2' isn't a plan. We hope this will increase the level of the organized tournaments.

Some things we think should definitely be considered:
  • What kind of tournament (Building/Fighting)?
  • Teams or FFA (2vs2, 1vs1, etc.)?
  • Peacetime (0,60, etc.)?
  • Game speed (x1, x2, etc.)?
  • How will map/location be chosen?
  • Maps
  • Rules
  • Drawing method
  • Tournament overview
  • Deadlines for rounds
  • OPTIONAL: prize?
The above are suggestions, just make sure your plan is as complete as possible. If you would like your tournament to be announced on KaMRemake.com, you can add a request. It will be considered by Lewin and Krom.

If your plan is approved, you will be granted the permissions to create your Tournament topic. Other members are able to post in your topic, so you don't have to worry about that.

In short: please present your plans to the KnightsandMerchants.net crew so they can be discussed. Once approved, you can organize your tournament.

Re: [READ ME] How to organize a Tournament

Thank you Anti for your help. It should be a big help for future tournament organizers.
I think me and Sado just finished a "half optimal battle tournament" but it was finished at least  and people are asking for the next one.
However I know the problems, that organizers have. It´s really not that easy how you think.

Biggest rules from my site:

*Find a co-organizer. Sometimes a tournament takes like 2-3 months, or maybe even longer. It´s not possible that you will be online all the time, so you should have a partner, that can help you.
*Make sure, you have really enough time as an organizer. Even when you think "ah my next exam period is in 1 month, up to then all games should be finished": !Don´t think optimistic! In each round one single player won´t play just in time, and you whole timeplan with just die :P
*In my opinion, don´t let any "total unserious and new members" join your tournament: I had also nothing against to let all players (each kind of skill), also those that hate me a bit, but there were for example 2 players in our battle tournament (Austrian guys) that just joined that forum, to sign in and NEVER answered any mail/pm or similar from anything from us => OBVIOUSLY SOMEONE TROLLED US
*Ask Ex-organizers (that have finished a tournament, succesfull) about their opinion about certain rules/ideas/maps. (We playtested some maps, before we decided to use them or not)

What you should avoid (Sorry when I take now special examples out of "(semi-) failed" tournaments, but with those examples you understand it best:

NEW tournament
Building
Maps Available:
1.Cursed ravine
2.Monsters islands
3.The Final Frontier
Total players:16
PT : 80
More maps if u like
About that: No details. I thought about my "site" like for 1 hour and dicussed with Sado about each simple small detail and rule, that I should write on the Forum. In that case it looks, like he just got an idea for a tournament and wrote some bulletpoints without any rules. E.g: No speedsetting, no player per team setting, no time setting, "More maps if you like" looks, like he never talked with anyone about his mapsideas. It´s nice to add some maps later on, but first you should have already some Fix maps and only add some more, when you really need some.
What about builderrush? Scouting before PT? Towerlimit? Post the replays or just delete the game, after you win it :P So like you can see, there are total no details :-(

MAP POOL : Final Frontier , Monsters Island
Speed :as u want
Players:16
Rules :2v2v2v2 and 2v2
Its a battle royal
Only 3 Matches : 2 2v2v2v2 Matches
1 2v2 match: FINAL
The last team from each match standing will move on to the final round
PT : 70
That addition from this organzier doesn´t make it better. "Speed:as u want" Well? As team 1 want or as team 2 want? Now "PT : 70" ? :o Then please edit your first post, so everyone can see it and don´t change your mind 3 times per page :D

The propably best known "failed tournament" is the tournament from Zoltan: Why it is the best known? Well because it already started and it looked pretty good. It looked even amazing in my opinion, but then Zoltan just left the community for an unkown time, because his time lost their game :? So please: Don´t make a tournament, only because you wanna win it yourself! Ok I am not a good example, because I won our tournament with TDL. :P However you should continue your job until the final is played. The community and the players will like you, when you finish a succesfull tournament, same when you will win that tournament. Just running away, is the wrong idea.

Yeah and like Anti said: Talk and dicuss with the community.

Re: [READ ME] How to organize a Tournament

I dont think youll get many players that want to do a CR tournament.. Mostly there is a selection of mutliple preset maps to choose from (by the competing teams ) each match. Same goes for the locs on the maps. But either way i would be interested to play :D

Re: [READ ME] How to organize a Tournament

Welcome to the site:)

As for tournaments, we seldom have them around here, and it's even more rare for the tournaments to actually be successful or finish!
I do recommend you join the Teamspeak server to stay in touch and to find challenging opponents. Check out http://www.kamts.eu for details
I used to spam this forum so much...
