Re: Rankings

Yes that's a good idea, the host could set a rank for the lobby: noob, average, pro
I agree, it'sgood idea. But noobs must play with Pro for increase their level
I tell you by experience :P , that 90% of newbies never increase their level, despite playing 1 entire year the same game over and over again. The resting 10% are those with Competitive's spirit, which eventually pushes them to the Heaven of Pro-gamers.

Labeling Clients (us the gamers) is discriminative for nature. Has been the typical way that most games, of any genre, has been doing for years and years (internet slangs like noob/pro).
Back in 1980's there wasnt any of these concepts, which started with appeareance of leagues and clans from different games.

------------------------
An alternative? I agree with level discrimination, as long as noone knows about it... I often "classify" a player I have met according my past and present experiences with him... but is something PERSONAL.

My Idea: Add in the Lobby a [bookmark option] to mark players I have played. The bookmark code will recognize the order of characters (nickname), and so instantly remember my Mark on him each time I log in:
1) * Starter *
2) ** Average **
3) *** Veteran ***
4) **** Elite ****

The feature has personal purposes to remember a nick's performance, without he knowing what I think of him.
This way we avoid people making multiple nicknames to "hide" his level (since he doesnt know what we think).

This way we solve the problem of general consense level... What if Florek is a V to me, but E to most people?
At least we know that he is a good player... but that goodness differs according the bookmarker.

Another funny feature of this bookmarking, is that we can trade opinions on the general chatroom...
What do you think of Kirelareus? Well, there everyone comments and perhaps reaches a consense, though temporally :D

What do i think about myself? :D. I would put myself between veterans and elite. IMHO

This is certainly a good idea. But you can rely on the honesty of the players in this situation. If such noob puts himself in veterans....

Re: Rankings

Players often dont want to admit their true level, or perhaps exagerate like you are doing now Kirelareus! (joke)
Still my [bookmark option] doesnt allow auto-label, I didn't mention that :)
I think that is senseless, because noone should see letters, symbols or whatever in the room...

I forgot to mention... ?.S.A.V.E. Every other nick you see when you log in to Multiplayer... has "?"
What are you waiting for?! Meet that player to find out his level (according your beliefs  )

I imagine this as a small left square next to a nickname where [?-S-A-V-E] is shown. Example: [A] Lord_Stronghold :D
BookMark is available on Multiplayer's lobby (a new feature to it). You can change it only there, outside of rooms.
Simple use: You type the nickname in the correspondient category. Once you return to Lobby you will see those nicknames marked as you want to (even if they are already in game)... Those who arent written in your Book, will figure as [?].

--------------------
Everyone may want to opin about bookmarking feature... but if most players around agree with this unique way to not hurt feelings, avoid trolling and accurate leveling, I'd like to know if Krom/Lewin could implement it in a future expansion.

I agree with Kirelareus, i nominate myself a noob on process of learning. I learned a lot playing multiplayer and I know that I have more to learn, and I think a rank will, like everybody said, exclude people like me...

Ok, I didnt consider the Clans tags... and also that at left side there are already Flags (from choosen language).

New Visual
1º) We put the bookmark reference at the right (before Starting Ubication option)
2º) We replace S-A-V-E for Asterisks lile *-**-***-**** (3* triangle, 4* square)

[R.A] Kirelareus.......[***]

---------------------------------
The newbie guy... Dont worry, but bookmarking is a feature MOST players would want to have... if you are learning, then by the time this could be implemented you will be already an Average or Veteran.

Also, already mentioned about its private use, for personal reminder.
During room chats, there may be formed a general consensus about you, but will be forgotten, that's the way of the world.

Re: Rankings

Guys, it's getting boring.

I'm against any form of divides and rankings, it's obvious to say that multiplayer KaM Remake scene is very young so wait then for any tournaments first.

Ahh, by the way! :D

Dah man... the small square [?] showing the marking is not part of the nickname space... but an add-on before choosing "starting location". Room designers can make a small space by shortening Team/Flag Colour tiles, so everything fits in 1 line.

Display: Country|Nick (16)|Mark|Location|Team|Colour|Ready|Ping

Explaining more this idea is not necessary. I expressed my points quite well.
Waiting for other SERIOUS opinions...

Re: Rankings

I think the bookmarking idea is quite obscure and strange, I've never seen anything like that in other games and I don't think many people would use it. If you're going to do that you might as well keep your own list of player names+ranks in Notepad, it's hardly any extra work.

Other problems:
- People use the same nicknames (e.g. there are probably at least two players called David out there)
- There is no space on the multiplayer screen for any more columns

I think having the host set the lobby difficulty from options like these:
any (default)
beginner
average
veteran

Then if a noob wants to play another game with noobs he makes a beginner lobby, and pro players won't join it.
And if people want to organise a competitive match they can make it veteran and noobs will only join it if they want to play against more advanced players to learn.

Other problems:

-> People use the same nicknames: Really small percentage, 1%? I just recall Siegfried, and someone who wanted to troll GWB.
Not significative, I guess 99% of players want to be "unique" so they will find the way to difference from the rest.

-> There is no space on the multiplayer screen for any more columns: I proposed shortening a bit the Team/Colour columns which are quite large for its purpose (you can check in room, how much space every column occupies). Besides a square Mark should be tiny (of the size of Country Flag). Requires a small redesign.

-> Bookmarking idea is quite obscure and strange, I've never seen anything like that in other games: That's because is a pioneer Idea, KaMR could be the first to implement into a game a multiplayer personal marker... Is much better than public labels, those really generate conflicts. You will want to remember HOW skilled is one or if you havent played someone yet! [?]

-> And I don't think many people would use it: I have posted Idea today, still many days to discuss if its worth or not.
This is useful for starters to identify players, and for veterans to organize balanced matches.
What the hell... everyone will use it! Innovating multiplayer's organization is a big step forward into lobby mechanics.

Anecdote: My brother used to have a paper where he wrote the newbies he met (and didnt want to play again).
It's funny, but 90% of players will find a proper use to the Skillmarker.

Oh yes... that's the new coined suitable expression: Skillmarks.
I love how it sounds... so pro
:D

I find this type of organization less productive. With Skillmarkers, everyone's level becomes part of instant consensus, thus HOST can make really good games, by ordering strengths in different teams...

Setting a lobby difficulty, wont change what we see around nowadays... newbies will join anywhere, and you wont have anything at hand to make proper teams. :'( ... and remember trolling problem (those who ruin a "veteran" match, just because are serious).
