the typical seems to be 2300-2400 tcp/udp? and a few others. you can always use dmz or bypass the router ONLY to test because it's NOT safe.

I don't find it such a sacrifice to completely disable the firewall system for the period of playing KaM, what about you? Well, having no info about ports used by KaM is a bigger problem. I was once told to try to allow 6000-7000 as most of the games does so but I don't remember succeeding, maybe because I'm not so involved in different kinds of router configuration.

the fact that running without a firewall leaves you open to attack without even opening your web browser, leaves a good impression on me. linux might not be as big a worry however.
see if this is any help.

Personally, I always end up using DMZ whenever I get problems with the firewall blocking internet access from one of my games. I usually also prefer routers without firewalls over ones with one as they just cause a lot of unnecessary hassle. Naturally, I'm running a software firewall as back up.
But if your windows is up to date with all the latest security fixes etc. there shouldn't be any harm in disabling your firewall for the time you play KaM.

bah, windows is for n00bs. modified windows is l33t.
if you want to run dual OS, run a modified windows for gaming and non internet browsing support. try Nlite to modify a windows installation.
i got win 2k down to 260mb total on my HDD. winxp down to 600mb.
litude, i would like to know what you think of ranger, if you are going to look into it. i'm too lazy/busy.
gyula, my last skirmish game vs the AI lasted 5 hours. prepare yourself.

Windows may be for noobs, but Linux besides Windows is for me. Well, word "noob" is for noobs. I know that "newbie" is very much longer but supports speaking English.

I have played many a game using IPX protocol. It is very stable, no crashes even after 4 or 5 hours of play, but it is only for LAN games.

It's worth noting that GameRanger works fantastically for multiplayer KnM. At least as far as TSK is concerned. I've played and completed three games now with a friend, without any issues at all.
