Okay so I was wrong about the American/British thing, I think partly because this is one of the few cases where Australia uses the American version of a word rather than the British. From Wikipedia: My understanding now is that before they found maize in America, corn would have been used to describe wheat. Therefore it is very suitable for a middle ages game. In German the word for grain is Korn (as far as I can see) and Wikitionary says that the Old English meaning of corn is "a grain or seed". The mission briefings use Old English (thou, thy, etc.) so it makes sense to use the word corn rather than wheat in KaM, it keeps with the middle ages style of language.

I've downloaded KaM Remake two days ago, and i'm new to all these discussions and all... i read only the first few pages of this topic before gettin board and deciding to post my ideas anyway, as they weren't in that first post with all ideas, by T*AnTi-V!RuZz
So if any of them was already discussed, i apologize.

1st - About the walls thing, i agreed with someone (I can't remember who it was) that it would be good to implement walls in the map editor, at least to add some diversity to the maps... if siege equipment aren't added, the walls could even be undistructable (like a natural barrier sort of thing)
Other idea about walls could be wooden barricades, as that would be quite common in Middle Ages, because they are "makeshift walls that can be build in a moment's notice to prevent an attack" however, as it seems quite obvious, wooden walls are easily dropped down by any troop (except archers of course)

2nd - About map editor. To make things more easy, as i find it annoying to keep rotating tiles every time I want to change from one sort of landscape to another(eg.sand to grass), you could make an automatic tile.
Explaining better, I select a sort of tile, in this example it will be snow. Well, my map is currently filled with grass. When i put the snow, it will detect the tiles that are on each side (and diagonals) and with that select the right tile that would change the landscape from one type to another.

I dont know where i saw this (maybe on one of the map editors for the original KaM?) :roll:

1st It needs a new sprite to have wooden walls or palisades.
2nd There is a better map editor which has almost everything you need.
Maybe it is an idea to put the other editors on the Remake site.

I don't think it is a problem that you need some new sprites (4 for the directions and some extra for the 'still in building mode', so maybe 16 sprites i think). Creating a sprite for a pallisade can be done, it is not so complex as a normal building or soldier (far more complex as a soldier can walk 8 directions).

Far more important than ?can it be done? is whether we as community do want pallisades/walls in KaM, as they do change the gameplay. Me personally would like these walls implemented IF the host in a mulitplayer game can decide pallisades/walls may not be used. Of course Lewin and Krom are the decisive factors when it comes to adding new features, such as walls!

Walls can be added in the map as an indestructible part of the terrain, the same as the walls used in the original campaigns. (and the edge of bridges)
Destructible walls are being considered, but I'm worried they will make the game too defensive. Also, new features like this are generally a low priority in development because we have a lot of other issues to resolve first.
Features like this which have a major impact on the gameplay will be optional so the host can choose whether to play with them. (same for single player too)

The built in map editor is not complete. We will add proper terrain tiling just like in Krom's map editor and all of the other missing features. I added a note and links to the downloads page although I'm not sure it will be noticed by many people.

But, don't we need new sprites if we want to make possible to build/destroy a wall.

And for the palisades, I'd say it is quite a good idea. But, in my opinion it should be build with logs.

I think it would be too strange to use logs instead of planks as a building material, when it's never done in such a way in the actual game. But I agree with Lewin in that walls will require a lot of thought if they are to fit into the game without drastically changing the way it's played, and they should not have a high priority.

Also, regardless of whether or not "Corn" is correct... it's just KaM :p

I hereby proclaim the following definition totally valid, since I seem to be using it an awful lot:

KaM (adj.): Describes a loveable characteristic or feature of "Knights and Merchants", or a feature that would seem natural and consistent with the original game if introduced.

Some other strange translations which I love because they're so strange and they make the game unique:
- Axe fighters (axemen would have been more normal)
- Sword fighters (swordsmen)
- Lance carriers
- Storm attack (I love this one, "charge" would have made more sense but "Storm attack" is so cool )
- "This troop is really hungry, they better get something to eat real soon!" (lol at "they better get something to eat real soon!" )

It just wouldn't be KaM without these strange but cool translations.

I'd say lancers is much more common? No wait, that's supposed to be cavalry.

I like storm attack too.

lancers are lance carrying (heavy) armored horsemen
though I totally get why you would say lancers.(Lanciers)

Well, I don't know if its always like this, but i had a really hard time trying to get to play online multiplayer yesterday, and in the end I gave up.
here's another idea (i'm full of ideas )
Instead of having to create/enter a server and wait a really long monotonous time while people join, wouldn't it really help if you could see who was online (in that server selecting room) and even talk to them ? cos sometimes I think people are just there waiting, trying to enter a room and can't contact each other and say "hey, lets play!"
and i know it wasn't just me, there were like another 3 or four people also trying to play and I couldn't get them to meet in the same server!

I dunno what you guys think, but I think it would save a hell of a lot of waiting.

The thing will always be with KaM that it will take long to be able to join.
I play LoL and here are the differences:
KaM: small player count and matches varying from 1 to 6hours or maybe even more.
LoL: Huge player count and matches take 15-60min

Our best hope to get into matches faster is by getting more players.(Or make matches go faster)
