Yeah I agree that sounds best. To be honest I don't care about school/inn/storehouse placement that much, (as long as it's sensible enough) but I can understand that some people do. We are planning to add starting options eventually, although hopefully in a more flexible and interesting way than KaM did it.
I can live with starting options. That would be very cool, actually.
(...)
I always have two schools in multiplayer, and occasionally two inns/storehouses.
Watching things be built is just part of KaM, that's how it's meant to be. It gives you time to plan the rest of your village, admire the visuals, think about the tactics you will use, etc. I think it's a good way to start the game.
If we were going to reduce building times just because people don't like waiting, we might as well make building instant. Either way, it's not the same game. (although instant building could be added as a cheat)
And before you ask, yes we could add an optional button for it in the lobby, but if we added every optional feature people have suggested they would have filled 5 lobby screens by now. I don't want to have many options.
But if you have to wait for over 5 minutes (which is long for 1 hour pt), until you can actually start playing, that's too long (in my opinion).

Anyway, cheats would be fun to have back in the game, just to screw around sometimes.

It's still playing while you're waiting for them to be built, don't you plan your town or something? Chat with the other players? It's part of the game. And why is waiting for the stonemason/woodcutter any different?

Have back? We already support the storehouse cheat (+10 resources or victory) from KaM TSK/TPR and that's the only KaM cheat I know about. But we'll add more eventually.

I'd rather not make people start with a school and an inn on my maps. Some people (like myself) like to build them themselves. Sometimes I want 2 tiles distance between my school and my storehouse, sometimes 4 (so I can build a tower between them if I want to avoid militia rush).
I think the best solution would be to use different map settings like in original KaM. Instead of storehouse/troops/troops and buildings we could have storehouse/storehouse+school+inn/etc.
Absolutely agree with that. Personally I think placement of inn and school are very important because huge amount of things will be delivered there. Also distance from storehouse depends on what strategy you are doing.

However, in principle, Options Are Bad :D The less options there are the better. If you put too many options, people will divide between combinations and it's really bad for the community. I personally think of options like:
a) Start with every building as it appears on the map (default)
b) start with storehouse only
c) Start with storehouse + school + inn
(checkbox) Start with units too/don't start with the units the map maker has put on the map for you (default: checked)
Which is almost exactly as it appeared in original KaM multiplayer.

I don't agree. Options shouldn't divide the community at all, and if it'd do, there obviously is need for it, otherwise people wouldn't use it at all. I like customizable maps.

Meh, I guess you're right. But I think waiting for the stonemason is different, because it...
A: takes way less time,
B: gives you an opportunity to look at other things, like serfs and laborers.
But I guess you're right about the planning and chatting thing.

Really? I tried it, and it didn't seem to work. I probably used the wrong one, then.

Also, there is another cheat, the victory cheat (the same, but with the fish instead of the horse). Just saying.

If you read Lewin's post : "+10 resources or victory", just saying.

As many people, I always build 2 schools and several inns/storehouses in a game.
Like TDL I dislike maps where you start with inn, school (and sometimes stonemasons woodcutters and sawmill), because it oftens doesn't fit the plan you'd like to do, and that's annoying. I also agree with Lewin on the fact that this waiting time can be well-used to plan/chat.

Dammit, I should read more careful. I'm sorry.

Yeah, it was a suggestion. Now that I look bad, it wasn't such a good one. :P

Sorry I haven't been active lately, but when were different speed settings implemented?

@Ben: In latest update, you can use F5-F6-F7-F8 to control the speed between x1-x2-x4-x8 (if I remember the values right), current speed is reported on the clock.

this speed ups ruined kam i think but maybe you would add game speed fast and normal function. normal = 1x fast = 1.5x this will be better for smooth gameplay

Just checked with code - speed values are x1-x3-x6-x10
You can change the game pace (how often it will refresh) in INI file - SpeedPace parameter. By default it's 100ms. 50 looks rather okay as well. Note that this feature is experimental, also Net code relies on Pace being equal for all players, so change at your own risk.

Maybe thats what you are looking for.

I guess, dismiss is meant to get rid of civilians, for example excess laborer that are not needed in high numbers after finishing the big city tasks or stonemasons that just stand around after you ran out of stone.

Ah okk.
Hey I have an idea. Because I think a man can“t die, if you push one button-->unrealistic.
But what is maybe about my idea, that the man should go to the shool house and than the man is sitting in this house :D He is death, too. But realistic away from the village :D What do you think about?

Could you add just one more cheat to this, potentially by reconfiguring the pattern to the old TSK house shape and using the crossbow icon, to allow not only for instant victory but if there's a battle level afterwards for that to be skipped as well? This would be really helpful.

Another option is placing a storehouse trapped in the mountains on every battle level, but this could come across as a little unrealistic.
