Knights and Merchants + Vista, is there any cure?

There's this major problem efficiently preventing me from playing Knights and Merchants. It's this OS I happen to have on my system called Windows Vista. Okay it's not a bad OS per se, but I'm having serious trouble making Knights and Merchants run smoothly on it.
I know there exist topics about running Knights and Merchants under Vista on the other fansites, however these threads are written in a language foreign to me making it quite hard to understand exactly what is going on
So I was pretty much wondering whether anyone found any cure for the problem that seems to be happening to everyone running the game under Vista. For those who do not know, playing the game seems like it's running like 8fps or something and doesn't really want to respond to mouse clicks.
I know of this incredible thingy called Virtual PC that some clever person invented which then ended up being purchased by Microsoft (to my understanding), but despite my efforts the installing of Windows 95 always freezes during the initial run of scandisk

If anyone knows how to do a proper install of an old Windows (preferably 95 or 98 ), such help would also be appreciated. I used google to search for a guide but I ended up pretty empty handed.

try using 98, it works better on virtual machines (I normally use VMWare though...), otherwise, 2000/XP should at least run KaM better than Vista.

Or you could just remove vista and use XP - it won't even complain when you try to install a program!

(and better yet, the program will work!)

Actually, my Vista doesn't complain either

And I'd rather stick with the future

It complains more than it should
And the future is not Vista, vista is a failure in all ways - it is not secure, it is not fast, it does not give you more freedom, it does not let you run many programs or they will not work properly, the new things that were promised were not delivered (the faster filesystem, for example) but instead there is pointless eyecandy and a slowly responding UI
Ever noticed how the requirements for games are higher for vista than for XP? Vista effectively makes your computer less good, which is a shame if you have a good computer and a killer if you do not (as then it will be dreadfully slow, instead of regularly slow)
Perhaps Vista is fast with 16GB ram eh? who knows.. It is not fast on my computer though (3.3GHz quad, 4GB 800MHz DDR2, 8800GTS 640MB) - I suspect it won't be any betters on yours seeing as only your GPU is better
Maybe windows 7 will be something, but then, I wouldn't hope too much..

But can you run the DirectX 10 version of Crysis? Thought not

And hey comon, do you really think it's surprising that Vista has higher system requirements when running stuff? Of course it does, Windows XP also has considerably higher system requirements when running software on it as opposed to Windows 98

Really, I think I'm quite fine as I'm right now. Just need to get that Virtual PC set up

Why would you want to use DX10? You can get the same quality with DX9, sure you have to hack the game because Crytec thinks you shouldn't be allowed to have the same quality.. but it's there

That's what hackers are for. b.t.w. Do you know that DirectX10 originally was meant to run on Vista AND XP?
Alky project is a DirectX10 hack to make dx10 run on xp. (Sadly, it doesn't run games yet...)
Maybe windows 7 will be something, but then, I wouldn't hope too much..
Seeing how things are getting worse per OS (ME had a few problems, XP had some more, Vista takes that position over again by not running things at all...), I don't think it will be better.

If you as me, Windows XP was far better than ME.

Not in the beginning though, but 2 SP's later it was OK - but the third SP doesn't make much sense, from what I've heard from it it's more dangerous than useful..

It does save you one huge amount of time after doing a reformat though. No need to download those hundreds of hotfixes that were released after SP2 went gold.

Or you could just not do that, they're not that critical..

Well, for some people it just works, but otherwise I would recommend you either dualboot with XP or have a virtual machine with XP (warning though, some vm's like virtualbox for some reason aren't good enough to run KAM)
I have had some succes with vmware
