Patches
![]() This small registry patch will fix problems where the game starts properly but when the videos are supposed to play you are only greeted by a black screen and the game eventually crashes with an MMSYSTEM296 error message. Do not install this patch if you don't experience this very problem! |
Size: ~1 kb |
|
![]() Another little registry patch which allows you to take proper looking screenshots using the normal PrintScreen button. Please note that this patch will not work together with the Windows Vista & 7 fix as it changes the way the graphics are output and you will always end up with a blank screenshot or a screenshot of your desktop. |
Size: ~2 kb |
|
![]() This unofficial patch created by the mysterious engineering people at GOG.com allows you to play the game under Windows Vista and Windows 7 without experiencing palette corruption or annoying slowdowns. This patch is included in the 1.60 patch and in the GOG.com release. Note that this patch is unnecessary if using Windows 8 as the game functions properly on that system. |
Size: ~40 kb |
|
Note that this fix will unfortunately not work on any Polish versions of the game as they use a custom installation program. |
Size: ~300 kb |
Tools & Utilities
![]() Using this tool, you will be able to view all of the graphic files that are used by the game itself. The interface is very easy to use and even allows you to view all the graphics in a slide show. If editing graphics is not your thing, but you'd like to take a look at them nonetheless or just simply extract them, this is the tool for you. |
Size: ~1 Mb |
|
![]() This tool can be useful if you have ripped the game graphics using The Barbarian's Graphics Reader. It renames the file numbers to a more friendly format if designing some software of your own where you intend to use the ripped graphics files. Other than this, it serves no purpose. So unless you're cooking up some software of your own, you don't really need this tool. |
Size: ~5 kb |
|
![]() This tool takes a MAP file from the game and generates a bitmap using a tile size of 16x16. It could be useful if showing off a preview of your map or if you're creating a page for your campaign. |
Size: ~3 Mb |
|
![]() Using this tool you can also generate preview map files from the actual game MAP files. This one generates bitmaps with a tile size of 40x40. Being in full scale, it has potential uses in e.g. mission editors that could load these as backgrounds giving a better overview of what exactly is going on when you're scripting. |
Size: ~5 Mb |
|
![]() The third tool in the seires. Using this one you can create preview images with the same size as the actual mini-map used by the game. That means that tiles are sized 1x1. Cases where it can be useful are pretty similar to that of the previous two tools. Can also be used for some experimentation. |
Size: ~1 Mb |
|
![]() This tool by harold allows one to create similar minimap previews as the one by Lewin. This one however also allows you to customize the colors that are used by the minimap which could allow you to have some interesting effects in use. |
Size: ~200 kb |
|
![]() This tool is for those who like scripting and don't need much of extra graphical representations of things. It pretty much allows you to load DAT files and then decodes them on the fly. The editing itself is done in a text editor manner, so unless you fancy yourself as quite the scripting wizard, this might not be the most convenient editor at hand today. |
Size: ~500 kb |
|
![]() This tool is quite user-friendly in the mission scripting area as it has graphical representations of what you have scripted in your mission at the moment. It does not support reading MAP files directly though, so you will have to provide a bitmap image of your map in case you also want to see the map terrain while doing your thing. |
Size: ~7 Mb |
|
![]() This editor was released back in the day and its purpose was to allow you to customize the main menu graphics of the games to suit your taste. It also allows you to save the menu graphics as combined style files for easy distribution. Unfortunately it was never much of a success as no style files usable by this editor were ever released. |

![]() This is yet another patch that was seemingly meant only for beta testers or for magazine review copies. That is because when the game was initially released in Poland, the game was already at version 1.52 so it is actually an earlier version than that of the release itself. |
Size: ~400 kb |
|
![]() The first actual patch for the German version of the game. Its main purpose was to activate the Net-Games lobby that used to be available in the game. It also bought forth some changes to the formatting of text in messages and citizen descriptions. |
Size: ~400 kb |
|
![]() The first patch for the Polish version of the game. It fixed two major issues in the Polish version of the game, namely the game crashing when pausing the game and being unable to save the game. Some minor issues in the translation were also fixed. Notably it also removed the screenshot function of the game and altered the game pausing function. |

![]() The second patch for the German version of the game. This patch re-enabled the Net-Games lobby as the old lobby had been taken down and ZuXXeZ reverse-engineered a replacement lobby for it. Sadly it also introduced three major bugs: being unable to load saved games, the AI would no longer attack in the new campaign and finally the AI could no longer control its units once they reached a certain amount. |
Size: ~400 kb |
|
![]() The final official patch for the game. It brought forth two very welcome fixes. The game would now run correctly when using Windows XP so you no longer encountered random crashes. Furthermore it also fixed the problem with loading saved games. Notably this is the only German patch that didn't introduce any new major bugs into the game. |
Size: ~400 kb |
|
Note that this patch doesn't include an updated main executable file, so it is recommended to be installed after installing the 1.58 patch. As a side effect of this it is also compatible with any version of the game. |
Size: ~100 kb |
|
![]() This is the first major release of the unofficial patch created by The Knight and The Barbarian. It included all the changes from Patch Pack 1.0 and 1.1 and fixed many more bugs that now could be fixed because the file formats were understood better. It fixed the major problem in the German version where all The Shattered Kingdom campaign messages were wrong, it fixed messages so that they would once again appear properly and improved the tutorial. |
Size: ~1 Mb |
|
![]() The second major release of the unofficial patch. It builds upon the foundations set by the predecessor and includes a lot of awesome fixes and improvements for the game. It fixes a lot of bugs in the new campaign and also rebalances some of the missions. It also improves the tutorial further and makes fishing generally more lasting in missions. |

The German demo version has a noticeable flaw where there is no music present whatsoever. |
Size: ~15 Mb |
|
Note that this is the slightly earlier release of 1.21 with the ordering information urging you to purchase the game from TopWare Interactive. |
Size: ~15 Mb |

This demo version was released as both a full installer and as split files for easier downloading back in the day when connection speeds were slow. This entry is the full installer. |

This demo version was released as both a full installer and as split files for easier downloading back in the day when connection speeds were slow. This entry is the installer split up into six parts. |

Note that this is the earlier release by BlackStar which includes a publisher logo at start-up promoting the publisher. |
Size: ~31 Mb |
![]() The first translation made for the game that was released to the public. Back in these days the file formats of the game were still not known, so the translation suffers from errors as you were not able to alter the length of text strings back in the day. Still it may offer some nostalgic value even today. |
Version: 1.54 (UC) |
|
![]() This is the first proper English translation that was released for the game. As the game files had been figured out by now, the length of text entires was no longer an issue and as such the translation is much better than the previous attempt. It uses the official scripts from the first game, but the new strings have not been translated by a native English speaker and as such they are not perfect but they are completely understandable. |
Version: 1.58 PP |
|
![]() A second release of the English translation appeared simultaneously with the release of the new fan made patch. The translation is still the same as the previous one with a few issues fixed and it also includes the new strings that were introduced in the patch. |
Version: 1.58 SR2 |
|
![]() This third release was made shortly after the game was officially released in English. As can be guessed the texts used here are the same ones as in the official translation. Sadly the official translation was seemingly not made by a native English speaker either and as such there are a bunch of issues in this translation as well. |
Version: 1.58 SR2 |

![]() This is exactly the same as the previous translation, but the difference here is that the Czech voice overs are not included in an effort to offer an alternate download with a significantly smaller file size. |
