What you need to remember is that source code release doesn't equal making the game freeware. There are still the game graphics, missions, sounds etc. that wouldn't be included.
id software have released the source code for pretty much all of their slightly older games and none of them are freeware.

They can be imported if you own the game.

Guess I misunderstood you. I got the impression from your previous post that you thought ZuXXeZ wouldn't want to release the source code because they'd have to make the game free or something, hence you suggested that only people who own the game would have accessto the source code.

I meant that the source should be included in the KaM cd.

I've got another idea for another petition. It's for the source code from the Net-Games server, they don't use it anymore...I think it's more probably they give the binary's server, source code, or/and reopen the server.

Well, then they'd have to run a reprint and I think they have stopped producing the game CDs. Besides how often do you see game source code included on the CD of a commercial game? That's right, not often. Your average Joe simply won't have any use for it.

Doesn't matter, when I make programs I include the source of them in their zip in a folder caled 'src'

Good practice, but most commercial programs are created by companies that suffer from a lot of corporate paranoia

Every company has to make money from something, otherwise it's bankrupt. When you make money on something it's logical to protect from thefts.

they dont protect well. and yes, average joe doesn't even know what the word "source" means. let alone using it in any computer term.
it roughly means origin, beginning, starting point? correct?

i suggest professional business brute force. but i tend to be an "answer me" type person. it'd cost way too much to knock on their door.

I agree that average Joes are noobs.
However, why talk about them? Obviously there are some people that will look into the source and some who won't.

Open source != freeware

... and the average Joe doesn't even know what it is :D
Still doesn't matter, because what about the people who DO look at the code?

We don't need the source anyway... decompilation... reverse engineering... diassembly... injection...

There are countries (like mine, Spain) in which I think it's legal even if the license doesn't allow you to

Also, there are games, like Uplink (which pretends you're a hacker), which
sell a CD with the game for $16 and a CD with the code for $40.

Is there any possibility if they don't want to give us the source we could ask for the server for online gameplay. If someone can get a running server, maybe they wil get more money for the game.

you want them to assist us in setting up like they used to have? instead of having to do the work that, i forget who, was trying to do to do something similar?

who would pay for the hosting?
